Valentin Uryupin conducts and performs Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto
Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto is the last work that he completed in 1791, the year in which he died at barely 35 years of age. And according to Flanders Symphony Orchestra, it is his most beautiful concerto. Not only does it reflect Mozart’s deep appreciation of the clarinet, but also the unmistakeable proximity to death. The emotional palette ranges from lyrical and meditative to lively and playful, a theme that returns throughout the work. Schubert, just like Mozart, felt the end approaching, while Strauss in fact tried to escape the inevitable. Arvo Pärt, on the other hand, found inspiration in death for his spiritual music.
Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto is often seen as the highlight of the genre - and even of his entire oeuvre. But in this performance the work takes a unique turn: Valentin Uryupin takes on the roles of both conductor and soloist. An exceptionally dynamic spectacle!
