The Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks is invariably regarded as being one of the best orchestras in the world, and this is partly due to the charisma of its star conductor Mariss Jansons.
Johannes Brahms’ reputation largely rests on his four symphonic works. His Fourth Symphony in particular is the epitome of German Romanticism and enjoys monumental status within the repertoire.
Where Brahms works with musical themes like an engineer, Richard Strauss is more akin to a magician. The symphonic interludes from his opera ‘Intermezzo’, in which he sketches a comic portrait of himself and his wife, attest to this. This autobiographical side can also be seen in his ‘Four Last Songs’. None other than Diana Damrau – who many believe is today’s greatest soprano – performs the passionate vocal part. Breathtaking!
