Tenores de Bitti (Sardinië)
The tenores di Bitti are masters of a millennium old vocal art of the a tenores singing. Since about twenty-five years, they have been singing together in pursuit of the revered musical tradition of their island. Their song is based on the sounds of nature (wind and animals) that frequently are onomatopoeic in effect. Their polyphony is for four voices: boke (soloist), bassu (bas), contra and mesa'oke (high contra). The soloist incants the melody or improvises a certain rhythm and intonation for the other singers. They sing in a circle as a symbol for the strength and unity of their song. Sardinia knows different tenors. This group is from the southern Sardinian village of Bitti. Four years ago, they were in the deSingel for the first time and gave a memorable concert. Their singing represents one of the most fascinating forms of polyphony in the Mediterranean area. In Sardinia, their reputation is legendary. Frank Zappa was one of their most fervent fans.
