For the Viennese pianist Till Fellner the coming seasons will be all about Schubert. It was not until deep into the 20th century that the ‘Liederfürst’ piano sonatas were truly valued by pianists such as Artur Schnabel, Eduard Erdmann and - more recently - Alfred Brendel. Under their impetus, Schubert’s sonatas found their rightful place: alongside the great inheritance of Beethoven. In particular, the three last piano sonatas from 1828 belong to the same class as Beethoven’s last sonatas. Just like Beethoven, Schubert manages to sublimate his personal expression into general human emotions. Till Fellner transports the legacy of his mentor Alfred Brendel to the 21st century. This promises to be a sensitive and vigorous exploration of Schubert’s subtle chiaroscuro landscapes.
