Thoughtful. Honest. Sensitive. Clear. With tireless perfectionism he keeps working on his interpretations until he reaches his ideal. Perhaps that doesn't sound spontaneous or exciting, but the young Viennese pianist Till Fellner's playing enchants you from start to finish. His understanding of the musical architecture and his ability to control the sound give him the freedom to endlessly vary the story he tells in his musical material. Fellner is certainly not the first to perform the whole suite of Beethoven sonatas spread over several concert seasons. In Fellner's concert-cycle we begin approximately halfway through. The Three Sonatas op. 31 were composed in the difficult but productive period of the 'Heiligenstädter Testament' and the 'Eroica' They deal with despair versus triumph, the darkness of his deafness versus the optimistic belief in a utopian society. The Sonata in A op. 101 has already evolved into the more abstract, polyphonic style of the later, introverted Beethoven. Each piece is discerningly observed and accurately reproduced by Till Fellner.
