Patricia Kopatchinskaja has been called the wild child of the violin. Her body, her instrument and the music she makes all seem one. She is ever thrilling alive to the moment. Los Angeles Times
A former percussionist and a rebellious violinist: that’s sure to result in fireworks. Gustavo Gimeno began his musical career as a solo percussionist at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and under mentors including Claudio Abbado and Bernard Haitink evolved into a world-class conductor, with a sharp eye for rhythmic precision. Patricia Kopatchinskaja is famous for her uncompromising violin playing: her instrument screeches, screams, sighs and groans, always in service of the music. Together with his Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Kopatchinskaja, Gimeno performs Bartóks Violin Concerto No. 1, a work that was only premiered after the composer’s death. It narrates a painful love story, composed for violinist Stefi Geyer, who rejected Bartók’s love. The orchestra also plays Curiosity, Genius, and the Search for Petula Clark, a playful work by the Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy, written to mark Glenn Gould’s 85th birthday, in which his curiosity and intellect are honoured. The evening concludes with Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5, composed just before the end of the Second World War, which the composer described as a hymn to free and happy humankind. A concert that unfurls like a gripping romance novel, full of drama and with an inevitable ending.
