Several years ago, Buscemi provided Dziga Vertov's masterpiece 'Man with a Movie Camera' with a live-music score. Now, the jazz guitarist Jean-Yves Evrard has taken up the challenge to provide music for another Russian film from the Royal Belgian Film Archive. 'Schastye' (Happiness) is a humorous film by Aleksandr Medvedkin, a virtually unknown master. It relates the life of the poor farmer Khmyr and his 'horse-wife' Anna, before and after the October Revolution. Medvedkin sketches an accurate picture of life in the Russian countryside, but the film was forbidden by Stalin, who interpreted it as an indictment of the kolkhozes, the collective farms. Medvedkin's film was neither satire, nor propaganda. Rather, he took the farmers' side, doing so in a highly original manner.
The French jazz guitarist Jean-Yves Evrard conquered many hearts with his live music for Arne Sierens' play 'Altijd Prijs'. From his group, Mâäk's Spirit, he has distilled a trio with bassist Sébastien Boisseau and drummer Eric Thielemans - soul mates who guarantee a stunning live concert experience in tandem with a piece of Russian film history.
