Give Michael Moore a free hand and you're bound to get something very special. He is never boring and always surprises. He and his partners lead you on a seemingly unending voyage of discovery through a succession of atmospheric excursions and impressions. We are talking jazz, but the definition 'atmospheric music with improvisation' will probably grab your imagination more. There is variation from bustle and storm to calm and reflection. Sounds are placed in space like specks of paint in a pointillist painting, which Barre Phillips himself describes as 'putting sound objects in space'. A musical sparring match with a whole range of colours and effects in combination with body sounds. The melodic percussion of Pallemaerts, the eye-catcher in this trio, drives the music more in lyrical terms than in rhythmic. The other musicians, too, use few notes. Moore's themes convince and stick, and he is able to make melodies speak as no other. The trio is masterly in mixing various influences and experiences to bring about highly dynamic and exciting jazz adventures. In Josse De Pauw's words, 'Listening to Moore is to witness the changing of the seasons'.
