Unheimliche Geschichten - Richard Oswald
Unheimliche Geschichten (1919, 35 mm.) has been called the first German horror movie. Five stories - by Edgar Allen Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson, Anselma Heine, Robert Liebmann, and director Richard Oswald himself - were adapted for the screen as tales, whose figures come to life in an antique bookstore, while the bookseller goes mad. The atmosphere is nightmarish, with expressive camera work and accurate montage. Later, Richard Oswald adapted the Poe stories for his comedies 'Fünf Geschichten' (1932). After an impressive row of German films, he fled Nazi terror and established himself in America, where he continued making movies until 1949.
Now several eminent German and French jazz and New Music musicians have provided a new score for this cult film. They have created music beyond all categories and will utilize string instruments on tape for this project.
