Jazz pianist and composer Uri Caine is known as a stylish piano acrobat. Like no other he is a master of the finest nuance. So it comes as no surprise that he has an affinity with such cult compositions as Bach's 'Goldberg variations', Brahms' 'Handel variations' and Beethoven's 'Diabelli variations'. Caine's rearrangements of these three series have made him internationally renowned. Caine has now conceived a version of the 'Diabelli variations', the best known of the three, for two pianos. This will be performed exclusively in deSingel. Together with his friend Luk Vaes, Caine tackles Beethoven's opus ultimum on two grand pianos. Vaes plays the variations completely according to Beethoven's score on one grand and Caine will improvise on the second. They have expanded the programme with other variations, covers, transcripts and improvisations of equally well-known cult musical pieces. At the moment they are considering playing transcriptions of Bach by Brahms, or Offenbach's 'Barcarolle' rearranged by the jazzman Louis Gruenberg.
