Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Kahn en Ensemble
Traditioneel khyalrepertoire
Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan (b. 1931, Budaun, Uttar Pradesh, India) is one of India's leading singers. He comes from a family familiar with the old musical tradition of the Sahaswan Rampur Gharana (Ragdaari), into which he was initiated mainly by his father Ustad Warris Hussain Khan and also by other singers. At the same time he developed an academic interest in old Indian music. His understanding of music history led him to revive age-old compositions and bring them to public attention. It is said that he is the only one with sufficient knowledge and technique to perform Jaati Gayan, music more than seven centuries old. He is also one of the teachers who has been able to train several generations that include such major vocalists as Hariharan, Asha Bosle, Amit Kumar and Sonu Nigam. Ghulam Mustafa Khan is not only a performer but also a composer, and has written several ragas and music for films and documentaries. His works, which are highly rhythmical and melodious, are written in a recognisable 'khyal' style. For this concert he is accompanied by his two sons on vocals, swaramdal and tanpura, together with several other musicians on sarangi, harmonium and tablas.
