Currentzis is phenomenal. He is the only major conductor who works so enthusiastically, tirelessly, and makes Purcell, Rameau, Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, and Berio sound magnificent - and this always turns into a flying movement. Süddeutsche Zeitung
Teodor Currentzis returns to DE SINGEL with a revamped performance of Henry Purcell's The Indian Queen. Originally based on a 17th-century heroic drama by John Dryden and Robert Howard about fictional conflicts between the Aztecs and Incas, this semi-opera was revised by Currentzis and director Peter Sellars in 2023 and enriched with new texts and additional works by Purcell. This production now comes to DE SINGEL in an adapted form, with a promising vocal cast. Thus, Jeanine De Bique shines as Teculihuatzin / Doña Luisa, while Amira Casar brings a gripping tale of the Spanish conquest of Central America, seen through the eyes of three women, based on Rosario Aguilar's novel La niña blanca y los pájaros sin pies. This unique evening promises to be an emotionally and musically unforgettable experience.
