Vox Luminis / Lionel Meunier
Dido & Aeneas
Dido & Aeneas: a baroque opera of love and loss.
Please note: the start time has changed; this performance starts at 5 pm.
The Trojan hero Aeneas is tasked with founding Rome, but ends up stranded in Carthage, where Queen Dido reigns. An intense love ignites between them, but torn between passion and duty, he leaves. Dido is left behind, inconsolable, and decides to end her life.
When Henry Purcell composed his opera Dido & Aeneas, he drew from this rich, emotional story. The lament When I am laid in earth, in which Dido bids farewell to life, became an absolute highlight in opera history. Under Lionel Meunier’s direction, Vox Luminis sounds grand, compelling, and sparkling. Carine Tinney and Jacob Lawrence bring the story to life with dramatic flair that transcends the intimacy of the ensemble. With a selection from Henry Purcell’s works, the ensemble fills the Blue Hall with rhythmic power and refined choral craftsmanship.
