Youth Orchestra Flanders is a new symphony youth orchestra in partnership with Brussels Philharmonic, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. Following a thunderous debut in February 2019, Youth Orchestra Flanders will be working on a second project during Summer Schools at deSingel. Chief Conductor Stéphane Denève from Brussels Philharmonic invites the young French-Belgian top cellist Camille Thomas to perform Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto, which perfectly captures the disillusionment and despair after WWI. Also on the programme is a creation from the Flemish composer Jeroen D’hoe and another 21st century work, ‘Blue Cathedral’ by Jennifer Higdon – a musical reflection on life and death. Finally in the love story of Daphnis and Chloé, Ravel transports us from despair to a happy ending.
