According to some, Bach’s music is full of number symbolism, and the structure of larger works is never arbitrary. The same can be said of the programme of Zefiro Torna and Ensemble Variances: the title 'BACHC®AB' is a veritable acrostic, in which every letter is a composer’s initial. In this way they bring together music from the 14th to the 21st century. Bach already knew that lobsters walk backwards and thus are the symbol for music that you read back to front, Thierry Pécou holds up a mirror to the world in ‘Retrograde/Miraris Mundum’. In ‘Hoketus’, Andriessen rediscovers a vocal and compositional technique from the 14th century, Holliger explores the most recent playing techniques on the oboe. Each of these works plays a clever role in this musical tale, for which Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven creates a visual framework.
