Ivo van Hove with a haunting love story set to new music by van Annelies Van Parys
In summer 1917, the 62-year-old Leoš Janáček meets the much younger Kamila Stösslová. She is married and at that stage has two children, but nothing is allowed to stand in the way of the composer’s infatuation. Shortly after their first meeting, he remembers an anonymously published collection of poems about the village boy Janik and his ill-fated love for the gypsy Zefka. Janáček recognises himself in the story and writes a masterful song cycle The Diary of One who Disappeared. Ivo van Hove illuminates these songs – which are normally only sung by a tenor – as a theatre director, with top singers and actors from Internationaal Theater Amsterdam appearing together on stage. Now at the end of his life, the main character in the production looks back at the forbidden passion that he has never been able to pursue. Enriched with fragments from the intimate correspondence between Janáček and Stösslová and new music by Annelies Van Parys, Ivo van Hove creates a haunting and contemporary love story.
