1h 10' A visually marvellous miniature opera for a single instrument: the theorbo. This 16th-century plucked string instrument - which can combine high and low-pitched notes - is soloist and accompaniment alike. What’s more, its construction demands a great deal of craftmanship and the details make it a musical gem. The unusual shape and rich history of the instrument inspired the versatile artist Nino Laisné to create an imaginative staging around it.
With the help of light projections, the stage is gradually transformed into a nine-metre-wide installation, populated by fantastic creatures, mermaids and satyrs. The monument is reminiscent of a cathedral, which is also shaped like the instrument. The projections change in time to the sounds of the theorbo, masterfully played by Daniel Zapico. Arca Ostinata is not only a visually compelling performance, but also a tribute to this stunning plucked instrument.
