After Peter Pan (2013) and De sprookjes van Poesjkin (2015) Robert Wilson is again partnering with surrealistic folk duo CocoRosie. Together they dive into the wonderful world of the Jungle Book. Rudyard Kipling’s story is now more than a hundred years old, but his message about tolerance and emancipation is more relevant than ever. In this Jungle Book, produced by DE SINGEL, there is a mix between opera and musical theatre, Wilson focuses in his visually stunning style on the friendship and battle between the animals of the forest: Baloo the bear, Bagheera the panther and the tiger Shere Khan. Subject to the laws of the jungle, which are not so very different to those in the human world, Mowgli seeks out his own path. The sisters of CocoRosie colour in the spectacle with a mix of folk, hip-hop, percussion and electronica. In Wilson’s 21st-century direction, Jungle Book becomes a story for all ages that recalls Baudelaire’s motto: ‘genius is nothing more or less than childhood recovered at will.’
