There is a turtle living in Meredith Monk’s apartment in New York. Curious as she his, the composer asked herself: what would he be dreaming about? Does he sometimes think about things? And if so, what are those things? And can you make a performance about turtles? Meredith Monk has always been unique. She writes music, creates performances, and plays piano, but above all she is a singer. Rather than singing songs to a text, she plays with the endless possibilities of the voice. After a whole string of performances inspired by famous composers such as John Cage, Bach, Miles Davis and Purcell, now for the first time Zonzo Compagnie adds a contemporary female composer to that impressive list. Meredith Monk once made a performance for Zonzo Compagnie, and now Zonzo Compagnie is making a performance about her. In Heydldiedendo singer Naomi Beeldens, trombonist Nabou Claerhout, director Ine Van Baelen and video-maker Stijn Grupping explore her oeuvre spanning a period of 60 years, pursuing the voice of Meredith Monk.
