2h 15' ‘Not half so happy in heaven.’ In his poetry Edgar Allan Poe often describes how love is stronger than death. This is the theme of Angélica Liddell’s new production. This Spanish theatre-maker starts out from the ancient legend of Lucrezia, who commits suicide after being raped by Tarquin, the king’s son. Her family unleashes a revolt against the monarchy, which finally leads to the republic of Rome.
Angélica Liddell’s approach to the story is not political, but from point of view of the human soul. She looks for the link between desire and pain. In her story, Lucrezia rebels by finding love in hell, where she and her rapist end up. In her view, passion has nothing to do with ethics. The genesis of this production was at the Venice Biennale in 2013. During a workshop, Angélica Liddell fell under the spell of twelve young men and on the street made her acquaintance with a Ukrainian choir. Apart from their sacred songs, you hear Paul Anka’s famous song ‘You Are My Destiny’.
