The promising young Palestinian director Bashar Murkus is one of the founders of Khashabi Theatre in Haifa, whose mission it is to question traditional art forms and the status quo. In their theatre work, Murkus and his fellow theatre-makers wish to encourage the local community to shape Palestinian identity. In 2013 he created "New Middle East" with Oyoun Theatre on the Golan Heights, a part of Syria occupied by Israel in 1967. The result of this collaboration is a dialogue between a masked executioner and a woman whom he buries alive. The conversation between perpetrator and victim assumes absurd features. The play is a fictitious reflection of the Syrian war and, by extension, of the violence that has the Middle East in its grip.
