BERLIN
True Copy
For their new creation ‘True Copy’, Berlin immerse themselves in the life of master forger Geert Jan Jansen, a character from one of their previous performances. Now he is their protagonist, and an impressive one at that! For more than twenty years, he lit up the art world. With verve: an unsuspecting Picasso and Appel wrote certificates of authenticity for work that he had painted. A spelling mistake in a certificate for a work ‘in the style of’ Chagall finally did for him after many years. But there are still said to be four works hanging in museums that no one realises were actually executed by him. ‘True Copy’ touches on a number of problem areas in the art world. And tells the universal language of one man who tries to keep on operating within a web of lies. Or are these variations on the truth?
