The Making of Pinocchio is a funny, clever and thoughtful two-hander, rich in playful imagery and direct-to-camera asides, about identity, definition and acceptance. The Guardian
Pinocchio, the lying puppet who wants to become a real boy, is a queer icon. That's what artists Rosana Cade and Ivor MacAskill think. The couple saw similarities between the experiences of the puppet and those of MacAskill, who embarked on his own transition during the making of this hybrid show. The Scottish duo uses the well-known fairy tale to challenge outdated ideas about authenticity. Because why do some people have to prove they're 'real'?
In a playful and joyful experiment with live recordings, digital manipulation, and clever set design, The Making of Pinocchio offers an intimate glimpse into a personal love story, as well as a creative approach to the visibility and threats faced by trans people. An eye-opening, joyful evening for everyone. No lies.
