With her daring, sensitivity and imaginative power, Caroline Guiela Nguyen is a unique voice in French theatre. Time and time again, she trains her gaze on the people in our society who are forgotten, who are not given a voice on stage. In Saigon Nguyen lays bare the wounds of the colonial occupation in Vietnam. Together with an eclectic group of actors from both French and Vietnamese backgrounds, professionals and amateurs, she tells the story of the city known as Saigon in the era of French Indo-China, but which from 1975 was renamed Ho Chi Minh City. What memories have been lost in this brutal transition? Through personal testimonies about exile, about the power of family and about existential loss, Nguyen seeks out parallels between Vietnam and Paris. Because ultimately we are not only our own history, but also that of others. In France Saigon was already an overwhelming success.
