For her extraordinary career, director Christiane Jatahy was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in summer 2022. In the first part of her "trilogy of horror", Entre chien et loup, which screened at the Red Hall in June 2022, Jatahy punctured the mechanisms of fascism. In turn, Before the sky falls was about toxic masculinity, featuring Brazilian President Bolsonaro as a modern-day Macbeth. Finally, the closing piece Depois do silêncio (After the silence), co-produced by DE SINGEL, explores the history of slavery and how it continues to this day. Brazil was one of the last US countries to abolish slavery in 1888. 130 years later, many citizens are still being exploited, as Itamar Vieira Junior describes in his award-winning novel Torto Arado. Jatahy interweaves Vieira's story with her own unique visual language, at the intersection between theatre and cinema.
