Christoph Marthaler . Schauspielhaus Zürich - GEANNULEERD!
Dantons Tod van Georg Büchner
In 'Dantons Tod', the two pacemakers of the French Revolution, Georges Danton and Maximilien Robespierre, are diametrically opposed to each other. They once fought for the same ideals, but after the revolution in 1789, when the ancien régime was brought down, they increasingly disagree about the way to go. Robespierre tries to achieve popular democracy by means of violence, while Danton points out the fatal consequences of this reign of terror. Accused by Robespierre of treachery and leading a debauched life, Danton is no longer able to turn the tide. He goes lucidly to meet his death, in the realisation that his chances - and those of Robespierre's too - have been thrown away for ever. The director Christoph Marthaler, an old friend of deSingel, stages 'Dantons Tod' the way Büchner wanted it, as a questioning of all revolutions that have been betrayed. Throughout the play we hear a whole range of revolutionary battle-songs, from the 'Marseillaise' to the 'Internationale'. The tone is gently contemplative, the directing penetrating and enchanting.
