It may be that nowadays no one any longer dies of love, but is it possible that love itself has died? In 'Die Fruchtfliege', Christoph Marthaler and his actors take the audience on a nostalgic journey of daydreams. It is a 'love performance' larded with dozens of arias from the opera repertoire. Not with the grand gesture or sung at full volume, but hummed or sung softly. The impressive stage set by Anna Viebrock was inspired by the orchestra boxes at the Opéra Garnier in Paris. In opera the music is traditionally full of unrequited or impossible love. And what about the fruit fly? It is the object of scientific research. Scientists look for the interaction between genes and behaviour. For traces deposited in the body by love. In this way we might learn why Tristan and Isolde today no longer die of love.
