2h The enthusiastic quartet that make up De Warme Winkel claims to have a great fascination for our confusing era and a deep love of history. Last season audiences saw them at work in ‘Poets & Bandits’ in our Theatre Studio. In ‘Gavrilo Princip’ they present us with the ultimate jubilee performance a hundred years after the assassination of the Habsburg heir Franz Ferdinand on 28 June 1914. What began as a failed attack ultimately sparked off WWI. The scruffy Gavrilo Princip walks into the baker’s feeling disappointed and hungry: his gun doesn’t work and his grenade won’t explode. But through a twist of fate, the princely car passes yet again... De Warme Winkel compares this banal coincidence and Princip’s social background to the historical impact of his act. The desire of some individuals to become immortal through an act of destruction is frighteningly topical. ‘Gavrilo Princip’ is a performance about a world that is about to disappear, about a farm boy who overthrows the established power, and about the subjectivity of history and the power of chance. A reconstruction, full of tightly orchestrated turmoil, ends in a battlefield. It is also De Warm Winkel’s first major stage production.
