Dimitris Papaioannou
INK
‘If I can put a nice bit of silliness into a sacred thing, it's the best thing that can happen.’ Dimitris Papaioannou
‘The viewer's eye is amazed, lost, excited.’ La Provincia di Cremona
The work of Dimitris Papaioannou is difficult to encapsulate under a single heading. Painter, cartoonist, director, choreographer, performer, scenographer, costumier, make-up artist and light artist ... He does it all. Tacking between mass spectacles and intimate performances, he has meanwhile become a world-famous, all-round artist.
His fame is thanks to his productions in which he puts the naked body on the stage as a measure of things - as a contemporary uomo universale. He places this nakedness in a universe full of allusions to Greek mythology and art history. For INK he himself appears on stage again for the first time in more than ten years (at DE SINGEL he will appear in two of the three performances). Together with the young dancer Šuka Horn, he presents a physical duet that rapidly turns into a duel. While Papaioannous’ previous work excelled at playfulness and humour, with INK he delivers his most mesmerising performance to date. A dreamy drama that culminates in a pitch black, flooded universe.
