Beautifully empathetic. 'The Hours' makes a big impression NRC
In September 2023, Eline Arbo took over the torch from Ivo van Hove as artistic director of International Theater Amsterdam. With De Uren she brings Michael Cunningham's eponymous novel to the stage. De Uren plays out on a single day in the lives of three women, at three different moments in the 20th century. Virginia Woolf, who starts her masterpiece Mrs Dalloway in 1923; Laura Brown, an American housewife from 1949 who flees her life in the suburbs upon reading of Woolf's novel; and Clarissa Vaughan who organises a party on a late spring day in 1998 for her poet friend Richard who is seriously ill.
Both Michael Cunningham's novel and Stephen Daldry's film adaptation (starring Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore, among others) enjoyed great success. In Eline Arbo's adaptation, the writer shares the space with his characters. Meanwhile, the women struggle with the roles assigned to them, each looking for their own version of freedom. A sensitive interpretation of a contemporary classic in Arbo's characteristic physical and musical style.
Technical trigger: some scenes contain strobe light.
