1h 30' Gorges Ocloo had long hoped to create a performance based on ‘Moby Dick'. When he saw a photo in the newspaper of a lifeless child drifting in the Mediterranean Sea, the final piece of the puzzle fell into place. Did this girl know how dangerous her journey in the refugees’boat would be? And would the ever-silent Queequeg have stepped aboard the Pequod, had he known that Captain Ahab was on a revenge mission? The Nigerian writer Ben Okri reworked Melville’s text into a magical realist story about the gulf between power and powerlessness, rich and poor, in which Ahab and Queequeg talk to each other for the first time, irrespective of status and ego, pure and naked. Expect a jazzy opera, swinging and energetic, about the need for rapprochement in an increasingly polarised society.
