Mefisto for ever
Just like Klaus Mann's novel 'Mephisto', 'Mefisto for ever' is based on the life of Gustav Gründgrens, a successful actor in Germany in the twenties and thirties. One of his star parts was as Mephisto, the devil in Goethe's 'Faust'. When Hitler came to power, this star actor continued to work in Germany and became a welcome guest in the higher echelons of the Third Reich. Acting was after all his passion, and for him art is sacred, above all else. But at what price? The director Guy Cassiers and writer Tom Lanoye continue his story until after the war. Because even after the collapse of the Third Reich this actor was able to maintain his position, now in the service of a new regime. Once again he became a star. Out of a blind passion for acting? Or out of utter opportunism?
