Heiner Goebbels & Hilliard Ensemble
I went to the house but did not enter
The German composer/ director Heiner Goebbels and the British Hilliard Ensemble have comtined their talent in a performance that impresses through its poetic beauty. Music forms the basis of all Heiner Goebbel's productions who not only studied musicology but sociology as well. Strongly influenced by the work of Hanns Eisler and Heiner Müller, he began his career as a director with stage concerts. Bearing in mind Eisler's motto 'someone who only knows music knows nothing about music', 'I went to the house but did not enter' draws on the work of T.S. Eliot, Samuel Beckett and Maurice Blanchot. Three twentieth-century literary works that examine the meaning of the word 'I' in a world in which there are no longer any clear roles or individuals. The secret power of this play lies in its visual suggestion. You see a completely symmetrical living room, a terraced house and a hotel room. These are assembled and pulled down before your eyes. But you do not enter.
