‘A Little Life’, based on the novel by the American writer Hanya Yanagihara, looks at a period of more than 30 years in which four friends pursue the American dream: Willem as an actor, Malcolm as an architect, JB as an artist and Jude as a lawyer. Along the way, we get to know them with their small flaws, their failures and their feelings of guilt.
In Van Hove’s stage adaptation, the impossibility of sharing trauma and pain with others is the central theme. He presents us with a dilemma: how can you help someone who doesn’t want to be helped, whilst knowing that you’re not a true friend if you don’t try? A penetrating story about true friendship, told by a first-rate cast from Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, previously Toneelgroep Amsterdam.
