2h 30' Director Ivo van Hove regularly returns to film, his first love. In March 2009 he presented his impressive stage adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's 'Cries and Whispers'. And now, a few months later, he and his whole ensemble of actors have once more created a theatre production based on a film script. And again they have scored a bull's-eye!
This time he has taken the plunge with a compilation of three films by Michelangelo Antonioni from the early the sixties. The performance reads like a tribute to this Italian avant-garde film-maker, who died at a ripe old age in 2007. In 'L'avventura', 'La notte' and 'L'eclisse' the focus is on man's inability to really communicate. At a fashionable evening party irresolute women and fickle men wander about like so many ships lost at sea.
Due to its length the 'Antonioni Poject' was briefly put into storage after it premiered at the Holland Festival in 2009. It will be rerun in the Red Hall specially for the opening of the new building. This is the perfect venue for stage designer Jan Versweyveld's grand film landscape. Welcome to a world brimming with emotional, psychological and moral unrest. That's amore!
