Good news! We are, exceptionally, selling tickets for the public try-outs of this production, on Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 March. This is the second time the director Ivo van Hove is tackling a script by Ingmar Bergman. The first time was with 'Scenes from a Marriage', which he directed in the 2004-5 season. Now it's the turn of 'Cries and Whispers', the film of which was made in 1973. In a desolate country house, three women - two sisters and a maid - keep vigil over the dying Agnes. All they can do is watch helplessly as Agnes passes her final hours, wracked by pain. Faced with this suffering, they draw up the balance of their own lives. Lives full of lies, failed marriages and sexual frustration. Death does not bring them any closer together. Nor are they capable of taking their lives in a new direction and breaking out of their rigid middle-class mentality and morality.
