Ivo van Hove - Toneelgroep Amsterdam
Romeinse Tragedies van William Shakespeare
Are you ready for large chunk of interesting, modern Shakespeare? Here is Ivo van Hove's next daring exploit. A compilation of three plays by the English bard, translated by Tom Kleijn and provided with rhythm by Blindman [4x4] drums. The director has combined three historical plays about ancient Rome under the title 'Roman Tragedies'. In 'Coriolanus' the hero of the title allows himself to get carried away by his anger. In 'Julius Caesar', Caesar is able to systematically develop his power through his popularity with the people. A conspiracy puts an end to the chance of a new dictatorship. In the final play, 'Antony and Cleopatra', passionate love is constantly thwarted by interests of state. In his approach, Ivo van Hove omits the original battle scenes and focuses on the mechanism of power. The murder of Caesar plays a central role here.
