4h In his partly autobiographical film 'Scenes from a Marriage', the Swedish film and theatre director Ingmar Bergman revealed that his emotional life was not always a bed of roses. Johan and Marianne are the ideal couple. Then one day, Johan confesses that he has a lover. Marianne's world collapses and their marriage is over. 'Scenes from a Marriage' focuses on the ten years following the divorce and shows how Johan and Marianne often revert to revenge, mental cruelty and violence. Love is possessive and destructive. Ingmar Bergman's characters are above all people of flesh and blood, prey to a wide range of conflicting emotions. In Bergman's own words, 'they are nervous, happy, selfish, stupid, kind, wise, self-sacrificing, affectionate, angry, gentle, sentimental, insufferable, and lovable'. Ivo van Hove directs this honest portrait of a relationship, the third in a series of four marriage dramas planned by Toneelgroep Amsterdam.
