4h 30' The 1943 novel ‘The Fountainhead’ was a bestseller in America. The author, who was less well known in Europe, was Ayn Rand, the pseudonym of Alissa Zinovievna Rosenbaum, who fled the Soviet Union for the United States in 1926. She wrote novels, film scenarios and philosophical essays. In her work she argued for the absolute freedom of the individual and a ‘rational egotism’.
‘The Fountainhead’ is set in the world of New York architects in the nineteen-twenties. The honest and talented architect Howard Roark refuses to make concessions to clients, while his fellow architect opts for commercial success and social standing. A war of ideas is raging. Between innovation and tradition, individualism and collectivism. In the midst of this ideological debate you are presented with a dark and sultry love story.
The national and the international press unanimously applauded this four-hour triumph by the director Ivo van Hove, stage designer Jan Versweyveld and the twelve outstanding performers.
