Ivo van Hove - Toneelgroep Amsterdam UITGESTELD
How long can we keep the flame of love burning? How does our passion survive marriage? These are the questions addressed in 'De kruistochten' (The Crusades). It is an adaptation of 'The Norman Conquests', a 1973 comedy by Alan Ayckbourn, one of the most popular and prolific British playwrights. As can be inferred form the original title, the play tells the story of Norman, a lusty librarian, who plans to seduce no fewer than three women in one weekend: his wife's sister, his brother's wife and his own spouse. With his typical flippancy and a strong dose of humour, Alan Ayckbourn wrote a cheerful drama about passion, marriage and relational dead ends. Director Ivo van Hove has an eye for the crueller sides of this comedy of manners and a contemporary sense of innovative dramaturgy. So it's not a soap… or is it?
