Behold, a baroque opera that is moving and pertinent in its simplicity. Jan Decorte is known for his radical, minimalist adaptations of several 'untouchables' in the theatre literature canon. This time he chose 'Dido & Aeneas' by Henry Purcell. This is his debut as an opera director. The libretto refers to an excerpt from Virgil's 'Aeneid'. After the destruction of Troy, the gods order the Trojan prince Aeneas to found a new kingdom. When he meets the queen of Carthage during his wanderings on the Mediterranean Sea, he is in danger of forgetting about his exalted mission. A passionate love develops between Dido and Aeneas. In his sober staging of this fable about passion and matters of state, Decorte leaves room for the richness of the music. And moves the audience's hearts.
