This season there will be two productions by the Munich Kammerspiele in the 'international theatre' series. Since 2010, this leading group has been headed Johan Simons, the Dutch director who has strong roots in Flanders. He will direct 'Hiob'. Dramaturge Koen Tachelet has adapted the 1930 novel by the Austro-German writer Joseph Roth for the stage. The set is a rickety carousel on which the three words 'Birth', 'Love' and 'Death' are inscribed. The protagonist is Mendel Singer - a star role for actor Andre Jung - a Jewish teacher in Russia in 1900. He resembles the biblical character Job. Like him, Mendel loses everything that is dear to him: his sons, his wife, his country and his faith. He is poor and the Tsarist pogroms are a constant and imminent danger. America is the promised land and he decides to emigrate. Unfortunately, it all goes very wrong. In the depths of his misery Mendel, like Job, renounces his faith. Nevertheless a miracle occurs, bringing everything to an unexpectedly happy ending.
