When the legendary ZTHollandia company came to an end in 2005, Johan Simons and Paul Koek each went their own way. Simons' road led him to NTGent, and Koek's to Veenfabriek. Today they pick up the thread of their artistic association for a unique musical theatre project on location. To this end they will consciously focus on the international port of Antwerp with its ships, docks, stacks of containers, huge numbers of lorries and so on. In Ödön Horváth's 'Kasimir and Karoline', the superhuman achievements and the promise of prosperity contrast sharply with the insignificance of the hapless lovers. In this popular 1932 drama this Hungarian-German writer veils his sharp social criticism in a tragic love story. He himself describes it as 'a ballad full of silent grief, softened by humour'. The unemployed chauffeur Kasimir and his fiancée Karoline are at the fun fair. Karoline's love of pleasure is so great that she abandons Kasimir to deal with his grief at losing his job. While she allows herself to be lured by the industrialist Rauch and the judge Speer, he finds himself in the underworld. While breaking into a car the police suddenly appear on the scene but Kasimir manages to get away. The two lovers finally meet again in an abandoned car park.
