From Michel Houellebecq to Roberto Bolaño and Don DeLillo. The meatier the literary stars’ books, the greater the relish with which Julien Gosselin gets his teeth into them. In Le Passé, devoted to the oeuvre of Leonid Andreyev (1871-1919), the French director sets to work with historical characters for the first time. In his time, Andreyev was as popular as Gorki, but his legacy was erased as a result of the First World War. ‘His sentences’ writes Gosselin, ‘nevertheless dig a hole in your heart.’ For Andreyev theatre was the perfect place to bring the dead back to life. In turn, Gosselin takes you on a journey through 19th-century Russia and the early sixties. In the style of film-makers Godard and Truffaut and with a rock-solid cast, Le Passé dives into the abyss of love. The stage becomes a crossroads in time: historical costumes, candlelight and old decors are mixed with live music and contemporary video footage. A masterful opening of our theatre season.
