1h 45' Jean Genet is the writer of resistance. 'The Maids' (1947) was inspired by a controversial event in 1933. After years of faithful service, maids and sisters Claire and Solange Sapin killed their two 'mistresses'. Out of frustration with prevailing class differences? Anger and envy? These are the perfect ingredients for a social drama. In her productions, the British director Katie Mitchell (b. 1964) also pinpoints sore spots society, and places where it all goes horribly wrong, from environmental issues to war and abuse. 'What is so unique is that her approach to these themes is radical and seen through the eyes of a woman', says Ivo van Hove, who invited this prominent international theatre-maker to Toneelgroep Amsterdam. She promises theatre that is innovative, highly individual and brilliant.
