Krzysztof Warlikowski Odéon - Théâtre de l’Europe
Phèdre(s)
BY COACH TO LIEGE
For his first production in French, created at the Théâtre de l'Odéon in Paris last season and now on the bill at the Théâtre de Liège, the Polish director Krzysztof Warlikowski zooms in on Phaedra. This timelessly tragic character is portrayed in a brilliant performance by the leading actress Isabelle Huppert. For almost three hours she gives her all in three versions of the same character, seen through the eyes of Wajdi Mouawad and Sarah Kane, under the watchful eye of two ancients, Euripides and Seneca. As is often the case in Warlikowski's work, the production is haunted by the shadow of the author J.M. Coetzee, who has become his fetish. The wealth of source material provides us with a variety of points of view regarding the violence and passion, the intensity of sexual desire, the breaking down of taboos and the terror of a woman confronted by her own ageing. It's breathtaking!
