Lisaboa Houbrechts
Siddharta
An inner voice urges Siddhartha to set out on his journey. He treads many paths in life before finding fulfilment in life’s contradictions. Lisaboa Houbrechts has reworked Hermann Hesse’s allegorical tale about the historical namesake of the Buddha into the life story of a young woman seeking to discover her soul.
In her poetic adaptation, Houbrechts reveals a polyphony that unites cultures and the arts, reinvents characters and plays with gender roles. Siddhartha is portrayed by singer-songwriter Meskerem Mees. With music by New York composer Caroline Shaw – performed live by the 24-strong Latvian Radio Choir – Siddhartha brings together theatre, modern opera, pop improvisations, Sufi chanting and Indian dance.
Following its world premiere at the Maschinenhalle Zweckel in Gladbeck during the Ruhrtriennale, Siddhartha will be staged on location in Antwerp, in Kambala’s set storage space.
