Ex-convicts recreate experiences in Lola Arias' musical theatre: empathetic and genuine.
Award-winning Argentinian film and theatre director Lola Arias pours stories from ex-prisoners into a musical mould. In 2022 and 2023, Arias shot the film REAS in a former prison in Buenos Aires. In it, fourteen ex-prisoners - all women, and some also trans - reconstructed singing and dancing scenes from their past. Now Arias brings together six protagonists from the film again for the performance LOS DÌAS AFUERA. The population in Buenos Aires women's prisons has doubled in the past five years. Most of these women were convicted of drug trafficking: victims of criminal gangs targeting low-income women. In a mix of theatre, (live) film footage, dance and music, Arias stages their stories, dreams and failures, without stigmatising them. How do you recreate a life as fiction, in the hope of inventing a different future? In 2024, Lola Arias was awarded the International Ibsen Award, one of the most prestigious theatre awards in the world.
