The predictability of a television quiz here becomes a harsh exercise in reflection
Luanda Casella, who from this season is one of DE SINGEL’s in-house artists, here presents a quiz. The questions become more and more uncomfortable the themes broader. What does it mean to win a quiz? In a world in which information is always at your fingertips everywhere, knowledge been afforded a special status. But anyone who knows a lot about the world may not yet be aware of the complexity behind the facts. In her book Killjoy Manifesto, Sara Ahmed deals with the problem of the Western obsession with acquiring and preserving happiness, particularly for those who do not experience happiness. In a world that is falling apart, the killjoy is someone who pushes back against this happiness narrative. Whilst the killjoy is normally someone who deliberately spoils others’ pleasure, in Killjoy Quiz they emerge as someone who is prepared to clamp down on every form of violence. In this performance, Casella demonstrates the power of words. Via multi-choice questions, she exposes our prejudices. The palatable predictability of a television quiz is obliged to make way for a harsh exercise in reflection.
