In Santiago de Chili more than a million people took to the streets in 2019 to protest against the excessive price rises on public transport and the corrupt government. However the coronavirus crisis brought a sudden and forced end to the resistance. With Oasis de La Impunidad the Chilean theatre director Marco Layera looks back at the riots and the violent manner in which they were crushed by the military regime. Although Chili has been able to officially describe itself as a democracy since 1990, not much has changed since the deposition of the dictator Pinochet, Layera appears to be suggesting. How vulnerable are citizens who demand their rights? And what place does violence have on stage? Layera sketches a grotesque picture of a city in ruins in which the residents are nostalgic about a future that is still to come. After a successful first appearance in 2014, this much talked-about Chilean theatre finally returns to DE SINGEL, and immediately takes over the Red Hall.
